Functional Appliances
Fu. App.:- its either Fixed or Removable – Removable (activator, bionator, etc) – Fixed (Herbst appliance
Functional Appliance       *Designed to ‘reposition’ the mandible.    *Leading to muscle stretching.    *Forces transmitted to dentition and basal bone basal bone.
Definition • A functional appliance is an appliance that produces all or part of its effect by altering the position of the mandible. • It is one that changes the posture of the mandible, holding it open or open and forward. • Nearly all functional appliances are removable
Removable: active comp. springs; screws; elastic Fu.: force compo. From 1-The oro-facial 2- Masticatory musculature
Functional Appliance Performed during the main growth period around puberty. The most favorable age for therapy 8-11 years for girls 10-13 years for boys (Pancherz 2000)
Controversy about the mode of action . 1- Produce tooth movement. 2- Induce bone growth in basal bone. That induce correction of crowding+ discrepancies
Mode of action: 1) Using the forces the muscles of mastication. 2) Using the forces of the oro-facial m. 3) Inducing tooth movements and bone growth by relieve adverse muscles forces on the dentition. 4) Inducing change in the basal part of the jaws by modifying man. and max. growth.
Tow basic appliances: A) Activator (Andresen). B) Oral or vestibule screen.
A) The Activator or Andresen: or Monoblock * base material *wires to apply a forces on the teeth. *corrected Cl. II mal. Hold the appliances
.Advances the mandible forward .Uses moderate opening of vertical dimension .Incorporate a labial bow for control of maxillary anterior teeth .An acrylic cap over lower incisors .Facets cut in the acrylic help direct eruption of posterior teeth
The effects of the monoblock: A) during protruded of man. The muscles of mastication stretch that try to retain to the rest position so exert a forces on the teeth like class II elastic.
B) the postural position of the man modifies or induces growth at the condyles and TMJ  so, effectively change the basal bone relation.
* Tooth movement during treatment by activator. * worn the appliances. part a time due to bulky nature. Interference with eat and speech
B) the oral or vestibular screen: * it is screen of base material which made to fit the vestibule of the mouth. * very limit application and used but the there principles are used by many Fu App.
Act as by: 1-apply the forces of circumoral m. 2- relief the forces of that M on the teeth. Full screen worn part a time partial screen can used more.
