General anesthesia

General anesthesia: is a reversible state of central nervous system (CNS) depression, causing loss of response to and perception of stimuli. For patients undergoing surgical or medical procedures, anesthesia provides five important benefits:
• Sedation and reduced anxiety
• Lack of awareness and amnesia
• Skeletal muscle relaxation
• Suppression of undesirable reflexes
• Analgesia
Balanced anesthesia :refers to a combination of drugs used to take advantage of individual drug properties while attempting to minimize their adverse actions
Pre anesthetic medications:
1. H2 blockers (famotidine, ranitidine) to reduce gastric acidity;
2. benzodiazepines (midazolam, diazepam) to allay anxiety and facilitate amnesia;
3. Non opioids (acetaminophen, celecoxib) or opioids (fentanyl) for analgesia;
4. antihistamines (diphenhydramine) to prevent allergic reactions;
5. Antiemetics (ondansetron) to prevent nausea;
6. and/or anticholinergics (glycopyrrolate) to prevent bradycardia and secretion of fluids into the respiratory tract
7. Neuromuscular blockers facilitate tracheal intubation and surgery.
